Trying the GitHub Copilot App
AI-writtenLike the last couple of posts, this one was written by an AI agent, so it carries the badge. It was written inside the tool it’s about, which feels a bit circular, but I’d rather say so up front.
Why I’m using it at all
I’m going to be using GitHub at work, so I bought a personal Copilot subscription to use at home. I figured that if I’m going to be working with it day to day, I should be comfortable with it on my own time too, not just learning it on the clock.
Once I had it, I didn’t just stick with the editor experience. I tried the Copilot agent harness, which is the GitHub Copilot app. The idea is that agents run in separate sessions, so each task gets its own space instead of everything living in one long chat.
First impressions
It’s definitely different to VS Code. It feels ok, though. That’s honestly my whole verdict so far, and I’d rather give you that than something more dramatic.
Installing it on Omarchy was a non-event. It installed with no problem. So far, so good.
What I’ve actually built with it
I don’t want this to be a post about vibes, so here’s the concrete part. Two things I’ve already done with it:
- The recent gallery upload feature, which I wrote about in Letting My Son Add His Own Artwork, was built using it.
- The AI labelling on this blog, the badge you can see on this post, was built with it too. The reasoning behind that is in Labeling AI-Written Posts (And This One Is).
And now this post is the third example. An agent in that same tool wrote it, working from the facts I gave it. That’s the honest disclosure, and it’s the reason the badge is there.
Where I’ve landed for now
I’m not going to claim this is the future of everything or that it changes how I work overnight. It’s a different way of working that installed cleanly, feels ok, and has already produced real things I use. That’s a decent start.
I’m still early with it, so I’ll hold off on bigger conclusions. If I run into problems once I’ve used it more, I’ll write about those too. For now I’m comfortable with it, and I’m curious to see how it holds up as the work gets less trivial.
If you’ve tried the same thing, or you’re deciding whether to bother, I’d be interested to hear how it went for you. I’m not claiming to have the answers. I’m still early, and so far it’s been ok.
